Waste is everywhere. We see discarded plastic bottles, plastic bags, and broken electronics every day. Recycling waste into something useful is one of the best ways of dealing with it. In this lab, you will learn how to take apart and recycle old materials into new forms. In the first part of the class, you will learn and use the basics of electronics to make speaker filters, radios, and radio transmitters from old broken electronic devices. In the second part of the class, you will characterize the properties of plastic materials and learn how to make a mold to form broken plastic pieces into new shapes. This is one of two lab classes offered, both of which will also teach you introductory programming, data analysis, data representation, and communication skills. You will also conduct a 3-week independent project at the end of the course with mentorship to possibly turn it into a start-up.
